The book of the famous English scientist and popularizer of science John Emley is about famous crimes, criminals and their victims, but this is not just a collection of detective plots. All stories are related to poisoning, and therefore the main character of the book is chemistry.
The first part is devoted to natural substances, and the second to poisons invented by a person. It is described about their properties, the history of discovery, use in the past and present, in medicine and crime.
On the pages of the book, historical characters come to life, such as Cleopatra, the famous poisoner Pope Alexander VI (Borgia), Prince Yusupov, who tried to poison Rasputin, as well as literary characters, for example, the poisoned father of Hamlet, Harry Potter. The book ends with the history of Alexander Litvinenko, which has already happened today
