The book in a popular form tells about one of the most intriguing sections of modern geometry --- about minimal surfaces in three-dimensional space. Such surfaces simulate the boundaries of the section of physical environments with the same pressure and arise in various areas of modern science. The work is based on the material of lectures read by A. T. Fomenko at the Mechanical and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow State University, including within the framework of the well-known cycle “Student Readings”, organized by the Moscow mathematical society. The book is equipped with rich illustrative material.
The second edition is supplemented by new material on one -dimensional minimum surfaces. It tells about various one -dimensional geometric optimization tasks, in which extensive extremals are studied.
For students, graduate students and scientific workers-mathematicians, physicists and mechanics interested in the applications of modern geometry methods
