The book explores the processes of currency cooperation and currency integration in Europe, the result of which was the creation of a single European currency in 1999, as well as the 20-year history of the euro in the entire variety of its economic manifestations. The analysis is built around the problem of the functional inequality of the currencies and the desire of Western European elites to overcome it first by restoring convertibility, then by stabilizing exchange courses and, finally, by creating a single currency that can surpass the former national monetary units in its qualities. Therefore, the starting point of the presentation is the formation of the Bretton-Wood International Monetary System, which laid the base of the dollar global domination of the dollar.
The research is based on official documents and materials, as well as scientific works of foreign and domestic authors. Many sources in foreign languages are first introduced into the corps of Russian -speaking academic literature. The extensive factual and statistical material is called upon to give the reader an idea of how the processes of European currency cooperation fit into the global context, and also correlated with changing conceptual attitudes and practice of economic policy. Considerable attention was paid to the crisis that began in 2010 in the euro zone, the analysis of its causes, the programs of assistance to injured countries and the strategy of building a full -fledged economic and foreign exchange union in the EU.
