A documentary novel shedding light on the last days of one of the most famous polar travelers of all time. The book became a sensation in Norway. It is of unconditional interest for the Russian reader, as it is connected with one of the most famous pages in the history of the Russian Arctic - the salvation of the Krasin icebreaker expedition Umberto Nobile.
On May 25, 1928, the Italian airship Italy crashed north of the Spitsbergen archipelago. The catastrophe gave one of the largest rescue operations in the history of the Arctic: both the Soviet Union, Great Britain, Germany, France, and Italy participated in the race. Rescue actions soon became part of a complex political game.
On June 18, the famous polar traveler Rual Amundsen left Tromso to join the race along with five comrades aboard the French aircraft Latam. Three hours later, signals heading to Bjornyu arrived from the aircraft. This was the last time we hear about Ruala Amundsen. “Latam” and the entire crew disappeared without a trace.
In 1928, Amundsen was 56 years old. He had financial problems, his last expeditions were greatly criticized, he was an aging polar hero with a slightly soaked reputation. Latama rescue actions were simply necessary so that he could restore his authority in the eyes of the public. But the expedition was poorly prepared and poorly equipped. Did Amundsen realize the risk that he was going on? What happened to the plane and crew on board?
Monica Kristensen is known as one of the best writers of the popular science genre in Norway. The writer, scientist, traveler - she is very successful in all these roles. In the book Amundsen. The point of no return ”Kristensen shows his skill as a narrator of the material that she knows better than the majority, namely the stories of the Arctic. On the basis of so far sources, she draws a sharp and lively portrait of Amundsen, at the same time combining this with the narrative of the incredible and unexpected side of the history of the North
