Galileo Galileo belongs to the words: The book of nature is written in the language of mathematics. After almost four centuries, we do not get tired of surprising that mathematical methods are great to describe our world. An even greater amazement is caused by natural science discoveries made on the basis of mathematical analysis of equations. Creating any complex design - from a cunning road interchange to a quantum computer - is associated with mathematical calculations. For a complete understanding of the action of gravity or quantum phenomena, we also cannot do without mathematics. But it seems so complicated and confusing! How to stop being afraid of formulas and love mathematics? Why is it so effective in the natural sciences? Is there a limit to this, or, conversely, for a deeper understanding of nature, will have to create mathematical constructions that no longer fit in a person"s head? All these issues are addressed on the pages of the book, and their artistic understanding is presented in a series of drawings of the artist Rostan Tavasiev. It is impossible to find the final unambiguous answers to many of them. But we continue to discuss them and try to understand how this world works. To do this, you will need to overcome the division into “two cultures”: “humanities” and “naturalists”. Let"s try to take another step in this direction.
Quotes:
Retrospectively defending the various attempts of mankind to comprehend the essence of things, we can hardly imagine that some alternative to a mathematical description of physical laws is possible. Moreover, for us now their understanding itself means, in fact, the construction of a quantitative model that allows us to successfully describe the data of observations and experiments, as well as predict the outcomes of future experiments. It is impossible to do this without formulas.
Mathematical methods in applying to natural phenomena are a new language of description and discussion of nature, which makes it possible to identify and realize previously unknown properties and processes. In addition, this language can develop rapidly, improve. From the point of view of physicist, mathematics looks like a set of well -ordered and reliable methods that have been interconnected with each other, which allows you to study the relationship between physical parameters and quantities.
Why read:
The story of the significance of mathematics in the natural sciences without formulas. Illustrations of a modern artist who are an independent artistic project. The availability of applications where the formulas (but at the level available to a good high school student of the physicomatic and mathematical school) show how mathematics in astrophysics works. For whom the main part of the book is intended for humanitaria, which it seems that the formulas are “not his”, But which would be interested to try to understand why they manage to use them so efficiently in physics and other sciences. To the one who would like to understand the “incomprehensible efficiency of mathematics” in the language of analogies and fiction, and then (possibly, but not necessarily) try to tinker with simple formulas with interesting examples from physics and astronomy
