The book describes the activities of the Government of Southern Russia in the field of science and education in Crimea during the years of the civil war. The topic is primarily examined through the example of the city of Kerch based on archival materials and periodicals of that time, supplemented with other sources. The peculiarities of the functioning of the public education system at the levels of scientific institutions, higher, secondary, lower, and professional educational institutions, preschools, extracurricular and enlightenment organizations are revealed. The danger of revolutionary processes, especially during wartime, requiring the consolidation of society and centralization of power, the harmfulness of misunderstanding democratic principles and freedoms are shown. The study also explores the usefulness of intensive scientific and cultural activities even in a fatal period for the country, the importance of ideological and enlightenment work based on historical and religious traditions. The documents and numerous quotes presented allow one to feel the era, understand the values of the national-patriotic forces that sought to protect Russia from fatal transformations within the emerging doctrine of communism and internationalism originating in Western Europe.
