John Maxwell Coetzee was born in South Africa, worked in England and the USA, and lives in Australia. A two-time Booker Prize winner and Nobel Prize in Literature laureate, he has not attended any award ceremony, rarely gives interviews, and lives, one might say, as a recluse. He seldom speaks about his work, and about himself - practically never. This makes the 'autobiographical' trilogy 'Scenes from Provincial Life' all the more unique, filled with episodes of shocking candor - 'before the reader unfolds the most detailed, unadorned, mosaic portrait of the creator, striving only for what is not easily achieved. Not all facts coincide with what we know about the real Coetzee's biography, but this makes the emerging stereo effect all the more interesting' (The Seattle Times). From childhood in the South African hinterlands, through youth at the University of Cape Town and cold London to the 'summertime' of maturity - we see Coetzee (or 'Coetzee') as closely as we never have before: 'a self-portrait uncompromisingly confessional and at the same time intricately elusive' (The New York Review of Books).
The trilogy is published in translation by Sergey Ilyin (1948-2017) - a famous interpreter of the works of Vladimir Nabokov and Joseph Heller, T.H. White and Mervyn Peake, Stephen Fry, Michel Faber, and many other contemporary classics. The translation was prepared back in 2011 but is published for the first time.
