Nathaniel Hawthorne became one of the first major American literary masters recognized outside the United States. His novel "The Scarlet Letter," published in 1850, received wide acclaim in Europe and became the writer's most famous work. "The Scarlet Letter" could be considered a historical novel, as it is set in the 17th century during the colonization of the Massachusetts Bay and the founding of Boston. Hawthorne tried to capture the spirit of those times, which influenced the entire civilization of the New World. His contemporaries, increasingly caught up in the whirlpool of mercantilism, sought to understand the origins and reasons for their current state. Hawthorne's novel, built on the collision of rigid Puritan dogma with the free expression of emotions, partly provided answers to these questions. This edition is supplemented with little-known diary entries by the writer, which he made shortly before the publication of "The Scarlet Letter." This short story became a completely new word in fiction for its time. Before Hawthorne, no other writers had written about the life of a father who was left alone with a small child for a long time.
