Savva Ivanovich Mamontov (1841-1918) was a prominent Russian industrialist, entrepreneur, and patron of the arts, heir to a successful merchant dynasty. Even in his youth, Savva's passion for the theater raised concerns for his father, the future arts patron and prominent wine merchant Ivan Fedorovich Mamontov: instead of learning the trade, Savva found much more pleasure in "playing music, singing, and performing in the dramatic society." It is difficult to even imagine what path Russian art would have taken if the famous Abramtsevo Circle had not been created and other glorious initiatives by Mamontov had not been undertaken. Mark Isaevich Kopshitsa's book (1923-1982), who also created remarkable biographies of Vasily Polenov and Valentin Serov, is the result of many years of research and systematization of extensive documentary material that preserves evidence of the life and work of a man whose contribution to the history of Russian art is truly invaluable - Savva Ivanovich Mamontov.
