The chronicler of Russia at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, satirist Nikolai Alexandrovich Leykin, as always accurately captures the observed images of his compatriots from various social classes and characters. In this novel, which is both funny and sad, various types of characters are cleverly portrayed.
The lonely elderly merchant Trifon Ivanovich Zakolov develops warm feelings towards his cook Akulina. The modest and quiet woman truly transforms under the influence of her new status in the house, and the dynamics between the "satyr" and the "nymph" change drastically. A friend-housekeeper gives Akulina useful, from her point of view, advice, and a relative from the village asks for a job, and it is not immediately clear where the chain of events that started with a simple sympathy will lead.
