Why did Japan strike the United States in 1941 instead of the Soviet Union, which at that time was suffering defeat after defeat in the war against the German fascist invaders? For several pre-war years, Japan had been entering into anti-communist pacts with Germany. Germany openly pressured Japan to go to war against the USSR. Japan and the USSR had a long history of confrontation spanning decades. Our country was severely weakened by aggression from the West led by fascist Germany. In the event of success, Japan could have gained a substantial prize - the Far East and Siberia (partially or even entirely). On the other hand, in military actions against the US, the Japanese could not count on victory: the forces were too unequal. It seemed that all the prerequisites were there for declaring war on an old adversary. But Japan chose its path of war with the United States. Why? The reasons for making this particular choice are explored by the author of this book.
