The reign of Alexander I is commonly seen as a time of great change, primarily in international relations influenced by the imperial ambitions of Napoleon Bonaparte. However, equally fundamental transformations were taking place in Russia's domestic policy at that time, directly linked to the debate about its future. Disputes between reformers and conservatives extended beyond court circles and affected the key social group of the time - the Russian nobility. Patrick O'Mara's book is dedicated to analyzing the complex and often contradictory relationships between Alexander and representatives of this estate. By reconstructing the context in which the nobility existed and its role in the country's political structure, the author seeks to answer an important question: could Russia in the early 19th century have embarked on the path of progressive reforms?
