The study guide addresses the positions of Russian literary criticism and aesthetics, as well as approaches in solving scientific issues in the literary criticism of the XVIII-XIX centuries. The book consists of four parts. The first presentations of university education in Europe, the formation, knowledge and scientific philology in Russia, in the second, the state of the verbal science in the XVIII century is being studied, the third is devoted to the issues of Russian academic science of the XIX century, the fourth considers scientific problems in the literary criticism of the XIX century. All personalities are accompanied by historical and literary and biographical references. Chapters are completed by control issues and tasks.
