One of the most famous hierarchs of the northern capital was Metropolitan Ioann Snychev, who was born in Ukraine in 1927. After finishing school, he studied at a technical school in the Orenburg region. His first direct involvement in the church service was during the Great Patriotic War: Ivan, exempted from military service due to health reasons, at the age of seventeen became a novice in one of the churches in Buzuluk. He was soon noticed by Bishop Manuel Lemeshovsky, who became his spiritual mentor as the young man was drawn to God. In the summer of 1946, Ivan was tonsured as a rassophore, shortly after as a deacon, and half a year later he became a monk, keeping his baptismal name - Ioann. Archbishop Manuel could not witness the further spiritual growth of his protégé as he was arrested. However, Monk Ioann entered the seminary in Kuibyshev (now Samara), immediately in the second class. The next stage of his theological education was at the Theological Academy in Leningrad, where he obtained a candidate of theology degree. Father Ioann continued his work in the department of sectology. In the fall of 1956, Monk Ioann Snychev was tonsured into the mantle, and his new place of work became the Minsk Theological Seminary. A year later, he was appointed as the secretary to Bishop Manuel - the Archbishop of Cheboksary. His new place of service was the Cathedral of Cheboksary. For a short period, Father Ioann returned to the seminary in Kuibyshev as an inspector and teacher of several disciplines, while also serving at the Intercession Cathedral. In the early 1960s, significant changes awaited Father Ioann Snychev: in 1961, he was elevated to the rank of hegumen, and in 1964, to archimandrite. At the end of 1965, he was consecrated as the bishop of Syzran, and four years later, he became the head of the diocese. He also temporarily led the dioceses of Cheboksary, Ufa, and Ulyanovsk. In the fall of 1976, Bishop Ioann was honored with the rank of archbishop. Archbishop Ioann maintained his connection with Leningrad, which he had loved since his time at the Theological Academy. In July 1990, he became the head of the metropolis. During his tenure, new churches were consecrated, and closed monasteries were reopened. In addition to his pastoral work, Archbishop Ioann was involved in academia, earning a doctorate in church history. He served on the Holy Synod, wrote articles and books. One of the topics that concerned the metropolitan was the fate of Russia, which he addressed in his book "The Battle for Russia: A Word about the Russian People, the Orthodox Faith, about the Present and Future of Russia." Other themes of his books included monasticism and Christian humility. Metropolitan Ioann Snychev passed away on November 2, 1995.
