The most comprehensive guide to traditional Russian holidays: from those we still celebrate to those that have long been forgotten and undeservedly so. The book is based on two works from the late 19th century: 'Folk Holidays in Holy Russia' by Nikolai Stepanov and 'Unclean, Unknown, and Cross Power' by Sergey Maximov. These two works, combined for the first time in one edition, provide a complete and detailed picture of the universe of Russian holidays and the traditions, rituals, and superstitions associated with them. From the main dates in the Russian calendar - Christmas, Maslenitsa, Easter, Trinity - to Bee Day, Horse Day, Kuzminok, Ospozhinok, and Semika. The publication is illustrated with works by Russian painters such as Boris Kustodiev, Karl Bryullov, Konstantin Makovsky, Petr Sukhodolsky, as well as rare greeting cards from the early 20th century.
