How did a Parisian milliner become the Great Mademoiselle? Few people know that her success is not only due to her own talent and innovation, and not even to her wealthy and noble lovers. Chanel entered the elite circle of Paris primarily thanks to distinguished Russian emigrants, whom she was introduced to by her close friend Misia Sert. The novel "Russian Friends of Chanel" is based on documentary evidence, in particular on the writings of Coco Chanel's friend Paul Morand, who never received permission to publish them during her lifetime. In it, the author - writer and art historian Elena Celestin - vividly conveys the details of Chanel's acquaintance, friendship, and collaboration with Sergei Diaghilev, Igor Stravinsky, Leonid Myasin, Sergei Lifar, Grand Duke Dmitry Romanov and Princess Maria Pavlovna, Picasso and his Russian wife Olga Khokhlova. The novel immerses the reader in the atmosphere of 1920s Paris, a period of the emergence of new art, inspired creativity, but at the same time, restlessness, jealousy, and lack of money - when "at Diaghilev's court" intense work and passions were ongoing, including with the participation of Gabrielle Chanel.
Vivid dialogues and rare archival photos of the characters accurately illustrate their personalities, images, and the life of the Russian intelligentsia in emigration, telling for the first time the story of Coco Chanel's appearance in the brilliant circle of geniuses and legends.
"Russian Friends of Chanel" is a unique opportunity to experience the incredible atmosphere of 20th century Paris. It's as if you are watching a documentary film featuring each of the novel's characters. The story of the legendary Mademoiselle's friendship with distinguished Russians became a real discovery and inspiration for me." - Taisia Stepina, editor of WDay magazine
