"Russian Freemasonry during the Reign of Catherine II" is the first major work by George Vernadsky. It was written as a master's thesis under the scientific guidance of V.O. Klyuchevsky, and then, in 1917, shortly before the revolutionary turmoil forced the author to leave his homeland, it was published. The activities of the Russian "Freemasons" are described in the book in great detail - from the emergence of Masonic lodges to their official prohibition by the decree of Catherine II. Like all of G.V. Vernadsky's works, "Russian Freemasonry..." is distinguished by its depth of insight into the subject: great attention is paid to Western European mystics, whose ideas influenced Russian Masons, the psychology of Russian society in the second half of the 18th century, the views on Freemasonry of Catherine II, Paul I, and the first nobles of the state. George Vernadsky (1888-1973) was a prominent historian of the Russian diaspora, a professor at Yale University, and the son of the great thinker Vladimir Vernadsky.
