The renowned scientist, academician Sergey Mikhailovich Solovyov (1820-1879) wrote a multi-volume 'History of Russia from the Earliest Times', in which he told about the main people and events related to the Russian land, about the way of life and customs of generations, about the tsars and subjects. The multi-volume work of S.M. Solovyov is recognized as a classic of Russian historiography. In this current edition, selected chapters are presented, giving an idea of the history of Russia from the reign of Feodor Alexeevich to the period of reforms during the First Turkish War under Catherine II. In particular, the book describes the process of the empire's formation under Peter the Great. The concluding lines of this titanic work were written by the author's weakened hand due to a terminal illness. He wanted to finish the final volume with the execution of Pugachev, but death interrupted the historian's many years of work, as he thought about it even in the last minutes of his active life.
