The Russian state was created in a constant struggle with external enemies, who came from the east and west, north and south. Domestic rulers had to be not only active administrators, dexterous diplomats, but also military leaders who personally headed numerous military campaigns and battles. Over time, general arts turned into a special kind of honorary activity, because representatives of many noble names sought to distinguish themselves in a military field.
