This book contains stories, essays, articles, and letters by Alexei Nikolaevich Tolstoy (1883-1945) about war and patriotism. At the center of the collection is the cycle "Stories of Ivan Sudarev." There are no abstract reasonings here. The author describes the everyday life, character of his heroes, their thoughts, and dialogues. And most importantly - their actions. With each individual detail, the reader sees the overall picture, which impresses with its scale and meaning. In 1943, Tolstoy participated in the first public trials of collaborators of fascist criminals and helped prepare materials for the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. Being well aware of what was happening on the front, he skillfully showed how the Russian character manifests itself in the most complex situations.
