The book is devoted to the fate of the Italian comic novel Bologna Julio Cesare Croce (1543-1609) "Intelligent Training Bertoldo" in Russia of the XVIII century. The Russian translation of the 1740s (manuscript of the Moscow State University), the text of which is published for the first time. A wide range of existence of Russian "Bertoldo" over the century - from a folk comedian to educational interpretations - gives a rare opportunity to consider its reception at various social levels. However, the phenomenon of the European popularity of this novel should apparently explain not so much by successful, consonant time, the text transformations, how many deep archetypal essence of its protagonist.
