The book explores the diverse activities of the Russian thinker, literary, theater, and ballet critic, art historian Akim Lvovich Volynsky (1863-1926), his complex evolution, during which he moved from analytical deepening into the legacy of B. Spinoza and I. Kant to his 'critical idealism', and from this position turned to the study of Russian literature and criticism of the 19th - early 20th centuries. The most significant results of this work were his books 'F. M. Dostoevsky', 'N. S. Leskov', 'Russian Critics'. Over three hundred of his articles on ballet and the 'Book of Rejoicing' constitute a kind of 'philosophy of dance' in the era of the flourishing of Russian ballet in the first quarter of the 20th century. As an art historian, he created fundamental works on Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt. The book uses numerous historical and cultural materials, including those extracted from archives, and for the first time publishes Volynsky's work 'Hyperborean Hymn', accompanied by a detailed commentary.
