The history of the 20th century in Russia is marked by a series of upheavals that repeatedly tested the country and its heritage. Many religious monuments - churches, monasteries, chapels - were deliberately destroyed by the Soviet authorities, fell into disrepair, and were ruined. The rapid development and urbanization, in turn, did not contribute to the preservation of the historical architecture of Russian cities. Many notable buildings perished during the years of the Second World War. Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky gave us a huge gift by capturing in color everything that we now call "vanishing nature": wooden architecture, monastery buildings, noble estates, peasant settlements, and way of life. Russia on the eve of the 20th century in his photographs seemed to freeze in anticipation of the impending upheavals. Neither the cinema chronicles that were spreading at the same time, nor the picturesque works preserved it - they are eloquent witnesses of the era, but to a certain extent unreliable. Prokudin-Gorsky's discoveries in the field of color photography allowed for the creation of a unique material that now serves as a basis in various fields of knowledge and arouses interest not only among antiquity enthusiasts. This is what the present book offers to explore. The album is accompanied by the text of Tatyana Sokhareva.
