Russia and Israel: a difficult path ahead

Israel is the only country of the world with which the Soviet Union twice in several decades broke diplomatic relations, restored only in 1991. However, despite some difficulties, in the most recent years, Russian-Israeli relations have been distinguished by significant rapprochement, both in the political and humanitarian spheres. The Israeli leadership fully supported Russian colleagues in important ideological issues for them regarding the formation of historical memory, and also transferred control of Russia over the Sergievsky courtyard in the center of Jerusalem. None of the Western countries have made such gestures in relation to Russia in recent years, and this has predetermined a significant improvement in bilateral relations, expressed, in particular, in the abolition of the visa regime and a sharp increase in the tourist flow between states.
