The book includes essays by Russian historians, written in honor of the centenary of the victory over Napoleonic France and published in the seven-volume edition "Society of I.D. Sytin" "The Patriotic War and Russian Society." The authors, united by the Historical Commission, set themselves the task of giving an objective assessment of the actions of the parties on the eve of the Patriotic War of 1812 and understanding what guided them in making decisions that for decades determined the fate of Europe. Separate sections are devoted to Russo-French relations under Catherine II and Paul I, military clashes between Russia and France in the first decade of the 19th century, Napoleon and his marshals, the internal state and international policy of Russia on the eve of the French invasion of Russian territories. Special attention is paid to diplomatic intrigues and military plans of both states, the reaction of Russian society to the events, and, of course, to the two main figures of the era - Napoleon and Alexander I, whose personal qualities largely predetermined the course of events.
