Kim Thúy was born in Saigon in 1968. Ten years later, she left Vietnam with her parents. Having the opportunity to live in Canada, her family settled in a small town in the province of Quebec. Thúy received higher education in the field of translation, linguistics, and law at the University of Montreal.
In 2009, she first shocked the Canadian and then the international literary scene with her debut novel 'Ru', the plot of which echoes her story of coming to Canada as a refugee, working, studying, starting a family, and raising an autistic child. Subsequently, Thúy wrote a number of books, including for children, and a culinary collection of favorite Vietnamese cuisine recipes. She also published two works dedicated to autism, in the non-fiction genre.
Thúy's books have sold over 850,000 copies in 40 countries worldwide and have been translated into 29 languages. In 2013, she became a Knight of the National Order of Quebec, and in 2023 - a Knight of the French Order of Arts and Letters. She has been awarded the Medal of Honor of the National Assembly of Quebec. She is an honorary doctor of Bishop's University and Concordia University.
She lives in Montreal, where she devotes all her free time to literary activities.
