In 1905, the Polish writer Genrik Senkevich (1846-1916) received the Nobel Prize in Literature for the cycle of his Romanov. The excellent knowledge of history and the brilliant talent of the writer allowed him to become a corresponding member and honorary academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences for the separation of the Russian language and literature. "Kamo is a fuss" is the most famous novel of Senkevich, a picture of the life of Rome of the middle of the 1st century n. e. And the persecution of Christians of that time is described in it with amazing reliability. To achieve such an effect, Senkevich processed many ancient documents.
All language nuances of the novel are perfectly transmitted in the translation, which was performed by VUKOL Mikhailovich Lavrov (1852-1912) He was born in a merchant family and received a home education in Yelets. The Polish language and mathematics were taught by the exiled student of Moscow University Boleslav Ivanovich Zelensky. After the death of his father, Lavrov dedicated his life to literary and publishing activities. He visited Warsaw, where he met Senkevich. After this meeting, Lavrov was seriously carried away by the translations of Polish literature. His translation of "Kamo is a mate" is considered exemplary, for the first time he was printed at the beginning of the 20th century in several issues of the magazine "Russian Thought".
Comments on the text of the novel in this edition are written by a professor at Moscow University and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences Sergey Ivanovich Sobolevsky (1864-1963) He graduated from Moscow University with a gold medal and soon became one of the leading experts in the field of ancient history and literature. Sobolevsky headed the ancient department at the Institute of World Literature of the USSR Academy of Sciences and was a professor of ancient languages at the Moscow Pedagogical Institute. The publication is decorated with the world-famous illustrations of the Polish artist Yana Joints (1858-1925) He received a solid education at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and for some time after its completion was trained in Italy, where he got acquainted with the best works of Italian artists. He was fascinated by biblical and ancient stories. His large -scale canvases of Golgotha and "torment of Christians in the circus of Nero" are well known. Work on illustrations for Roman Senkevich left a noticeable mark on the artist’s life. On the island of Capri, where he spent the last years of his life, he managed to create a museum with paintings and photographs of his illustrations for Roman Senkevich
