The first novel (published in 2021) of the German director Werner Hertzog tells the amazing story of Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese soldier who defended a small island in the Philippines for twenty -nine years after the end of World War II.
In 1997, Werner Herzog worked in Tokyo on the production of the Japanese opera "Chushinkhur" (stories about 47 Ronins) Then he met Onoda. They met many times and talked for hours.
At the end of 1944, on the island of Lubang in the Philippines, when the Japanese troops were going to retreat, Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda received an order: to hold the island until the imperial army was returned.
