Esme is born in the world of words. She spends her childhood in a scriptor, a garden barn in Oxford, where her father and team of devoted lexicographers take words for the new Oxford dictionary of English. Esme often hides under the sorting table, picking up falling unnecessary leaves with words and quotes and hiding them in an old chest - her own "dictionary of lost words". But gradually Esme notes that Oxford scientists clearly consider some words more important than others. And the words from the world of women often remain forgotten and not recorded.
