This novel is one of the first attempts to resurrect in fiction an interesting page in the history of the Russian state - uprising of 1707-1708, led by the Don Ataman Kondrat Bulavin. A spontaneous “defender of folk rights”, who called for “destroying the boyars, uniform soldiers and Germans”, the accomplice of the traitor Mazepa and the opponent of the reformal activity of Peter I, the Cossack centurion Bulavin is represented as a follower of the Razinsky movement, who led a wave of popular discontent in order to “destroy the untruth and live and live Unanimous Cossack Brotherhood.
