One of the most striking and colorful figures of the European Middle Ages, without a doubt, is the Duke of Burgundy Karl Smey, who ruled in the middle of the 15th century. The enemies awarded him the epithet "terrible", and the descendants poetically called him the last knight ". He dreamed of becoming a king and, quite possibly, he would have achieved his own, if not for the tragic death in the battle of Nansi. The name of Carl is inextricably linked with the name of the French king Louis XI. The famous English writer Walter Scott in his historical novel “Karl of the Brave "tells about their implacable struggle. The author masterly describes historical reality on the pages of the book, as if he himself witnessed certain events. The historical novel, according to Scott, should reproduce history more fully than a scientific-historical study, because it complements dry archeology by the psychological content, passions and views of people creating history. In order to solve this task, a historical novel, along with political events, depict the private life of ordinary people - to combine a wide political action and love intrigue, real historical persons and faces of fictional.
