The story of Viktor Nekrasov "in the trenches of Stalingrad" has become one of the brightest examples of the so -called "lieutenant" prose. The front -line soldier, an architect of education, who had not had a previously literary experience, Nekrasov managed to convey a personal feeling of war. This story is not so much about heroism and victory, although each of the characters can rightfully be called a hero as about inner fear, confusion, the habit of death, the ability to maintain humanity even where there are no more people. The engravings of Vadim Rostovtsev, clear and merciless, like sketches of a field correspondent, reflect the plot events and convey the author’s attitude to them
