"Fighter" is a novel about Soviet pilots, "Sokolas Stalin". They crossed the North Pole, thorce the air trails to America. Their life is a metaphor for overcoming in the name of the highest goal, trust of the people and the leader. Dmitry Bykov tried to look on the other side of ideology, to understand what power controlled Soviet history. The word "fighter" in the novel is ambiguous. In the thirties in the USSR, each representative of the new nation "could simultaneously be both a fighter and exterminated - depending on the circumstances. Many plot turns of the novel telling about the exploits in the sky and the subcoverous battles in the authorities illustrate this chapter of our history.

"This novel is my last appeal to Soviet history. At least I think so, because in it it seems, her phenomenon explained to himself. This is a novel about the pilots-“Stalin"s Falcon”, about the polar drift and storm of the stratosphere, about several geniuses and one king-king, about a woman who is doomed to return to his killer again ... "(Dmitry Bykov)
"And then Petrov saw a rapidly approaching fighter in front of him. He flew right to meet, for some reason without shooting, huge, black, unknown to him. He could not make out who at the helm, the red stripes on the wings were remembered - probably, personal combat coloring of the ASA, there were such fuckers. The closer Petrov flew to him, the more clearly he understood: the size of this machine exceeded all human understanding, more than fifteen, no, twenty meters in a scale, with an incredible screw, magnitude. Petrov realized that this screw would now chop it off, an extend in minced meat, and with a wild, last effort to rushed up. The giant overtook him and absorbed him. "
