The Russian -speaking Israeli prose writer David Markish is the author of two dozen books in which Russian and Jewish history and culture are inextricably intertwined. His novel “To become Lutov” is not a fictional biography, but, by definition of the author himself, “free fantasies” on the life of the life and death of Isaac Babel, which is bred in the novel under the name of Judah Grosman. At the height of the Civil War, the novice writer Grosman becomes a front -line reporter in the First Horse Army of Budyonny. Entering the struggle for a new world, he takes a new name - Kirill Lutov. But, even becoming Konarmeyts Lutov, he remains the writer Grosman, whose vocation is not to fight, but to watch, remember and write down, without missing anything. The literary gift will bring him fame, but how to find peace if the soul is separated in two?
