Daniel Defoe, a talented publicist, well-known journalist, and publisher of the "Review" newspaper, was also an enterprising businessman and even an adventurer — a common occurrence in 17th-century England. The author of more than 500 books and articles, he once participated in a rebellion against the king, owned a brick factory, traded in Spain and France, learned six languages, and was even a secret government agent. However, it was not pamphlets and political articles that made Daniel Defoe's name famous, but the adventure novel "Robinson Crusoe" written in his sixties — the first realistic novel of English literature.
