The publication is prepared for the exhibition 'Robert Falk'. Robert Rafailovich Falk (1886-1958) is one of the brightest representatives of Russian artistic culture. He lived a long life, his creative path was marked by a complex evolution: his youth was associated with the 'Jack of Diamonds', Sezannism, and Cubism, the 1920s marked a turn towards 'old masters', the Parisian decade (1928-1937) was characterized by 'returning Impressionism' and expressionistic tendencies, and his later period absorbed the experience of all preceding years. Falk's painting became a mediator between European painting, Russian art of the 1910s-1920s, and the emerging art of the Thaw period, nonconformism. The publication includes articles on the evolution of Falk's painting and graphics, a number of previously unpublished memoir materials, and an extensive chronicle of his life, including excerpts from critical articles from the 1900s-1950s, passages from memoirs of contemporaries and autobiographical notes of the artist himself, as well as from letters and documents. The publication is addressed to both specialists and a wide range of readers interested in Russian art.
