"When I sit down to write a book," Orwell confessed, "I do not tell myself, 'I want to create a work of art.' I write it because there is some lie that I must expose, some fact to which I must draw attention..." It was in this way that Orwell's four autobiographical stories, which make up this book, were written.
"Such, Such Were the Joys" — about childhood and schooling at St. Cyprian's, Orwell said that he "transferred to the fantastical 'London 1984' the sounds, smells, and colors of his schoolboy days," and "the suffering of pupils in English schools — an analogy to the helplessness of man before totalitarian power."
"Down and Out in Paris and London" — about the underside of life in the backstreets of glittering Paris, where he worked as a dishwasher in a hotel, and about the world of London's tramps and beggars, among whom Orwell lived for three years, sleeping under bridges and in homeless shelters...
"The Road to Wigan Pier" — about the north of England, a region that is both poetic and industrial, and about the hardships of life for miners, the working class, "the humiliated and insulted," — to whose sufferings the socialist writer could not remain indifferent.
Finally, "Homage to Catalonia" — perhaps one of his most scorching and honest texts, — about the civil war in Spain, where Orwell went to fight as a militiaman.
