V. A. Nikiforov-Volgin is one of the brightest writers of the Russian Diaspora of the 1920s-30s. In his stories, he recreates the traditions and customs of the Russian village that were lost during the years of revolution. One of the main themes of the writer's work is the changes that occur in the human soul in the extreme conditions of the tragic and turbulent 20th century. In the novella "The Pilgrim's Staff," a series of remarkable images of Russian people is presented to the readers: repentant criminals, destitute priests, beggars, and saints who walk on the earth, merging with Heaven.
