The novel by the famous Russian writer Nikolai Ivanov, "Rivers Remember Their Shores," is a poignant narrative about modern life, a family saga about the family of a Bryansk forester and former partisan Fyodor Buerashin, who guards the Chernobyl-infected forest. By the will of fate, his younger son, Captain Yegor Buerashin, a "GRU reconnaissance beast," is captured in South America while on a mission. After enduring incredible difficulties, he returns to his homeland on the day the Soviet Union collapses, and instead of receiving the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, he is appointed to work in Boris Yeltsin's security detail. He witnesses the events in the Belovezhskaya Pushcha that he cannot prevent. He then serves in covert external surveillance, pretends to be homeless to infiltrate a prison as a "chamber colonel" to reach a valuable witness. But October of '93 arrives, and he is once again left alone to face his destiny, with his orphaned nephews and the teacher Vera waiting for him in his native village of Zhurinichi. Nikolai Ivanov, the chairman of the Union of Writers of Russia, author of many books and recipient of prestigious literary awards, is called a "trench writer" for his dedication to gathering material for his works directly from "hot spots."
