The name of F.I. Buslaev (1818-1897) - an outstanding Russian philologist, linguist, and literary historian - is well known in domestic science, but unfortunately less celebrated among the wider circles of enthusiasts of Russian history. A collection of his articles dedicated to Russian book ornamentation was first published in 1917 and has not been reprinted since, although its significance will not be lost for a long time. Anyone interested in the ornamental book art of medieval Russia, its origins, symbolism, and history, should not overlook this book.
