The perspective on the 'Soviet person' presented in the book allows us to see behind this seemingly empty ideological formula a multitude of specific discursive practices and biographical strategies through which Soviet people tried to imbue their lives with meaning corresponding to the historical imperatives of the Stalinist era. The immediate subject of the study is the genre of the diary, which allowed turning the ideological criteria of the time into a factor of psychological self-construction. The heroes of the book - peasants who fled to the city and representatives of the urban intelligentsia working as rural teachers, engineers, and writers - used the diary as a means of self-observation and self-education, transforming existing cultural models into a horizon of inner development, making history a part of their selves.
