1970. At a closed Soviet test site, the latest missile defense system is created. One of the project participants, Gennady Khustov, stages his own death and flees abroad with copies of secret blueprints, hoping to sell them to Western intelligence services. The KGB learns of the defector's plans and sends the "Don" group led by Lieutenant Colonel Vyacheslav Bogdanov to track him down. He devises a cunning operation to prevent Khustov from making contact with overseas "buyers."
