The story of the life of one of the orphanages of the 1920s - the school of individual social education named after Dostoevsky, abbreviated as Shkid - as told by its students. This is a true school epic, in which the enthusiastic director, nicknamed Vikniksor by the Shkid students, who is passionate about pedagogical research, tries to instill lyceum traditions in a motley group of former street children, those whose fate seemed to lead them to become vagabonds, thieves, robbers, almost. Thus, a school newspaper is created, followed by the school emblem and anthem, and then self-government - a republic (from which the title of the story subsequently emerged). Moreover, this story vividly reflects the time period. Through the chronicle of "The Shkid Republic" with its minor disturbances and storms, the image of Petrograd during those harsh days emerges clearly. For older school-age children.
