The novel of the French writer-Russianist, translator Iva Gauthier (born 1960) tells about Jean-Batista Nicolas Savene-the officer of the Napoleonic army, captured in 1812, who swore allegiance to the Russian crown in Russia. In the first part of the novel, the reader gets acquainted with the legends, which for a long time was shrouded in the name of the hero. Then, the scientific biography of Saven is proposed, where the author provides a lot of clarifications, new documents and evidence, addresses and names. Saven’s companions are the marshals of her and Bertier, regimental quartermaster Streamal, General Miloradovich, Count Rostopchin, writer Dumas-father, painters I.M. Pryanishnikov and Jacques-Louis David, surgeon Francois Mercier, mathematicians Jean-Victor Ponsele and Nikolai Lobachevsky, Russian peasants and philistines, French townspeople and commoners, but also the city of Saratov, in which Saven died in 1894. The book is equipped with extensive comments and information about the sources on which the narrative is based on the bibliography of publications about Nicolas Saven, and mentioning it in the French press
