Peter Vail (1949–2009) - a famous writer, journalist, literary critic, as well as an indefatigable traveler. His books “Genius of the Place”, “Map of the Motherland”, “Poems about me” (as well as co -authored with A. Genis “60th: the world of Soviet man”, “American”, “Russian cuisine in exile”, “Native speech ”et al) They survived not one circulation and continue to be reprinted, and the“ genius of place ”became the basis of a multi -part television movie.
The collection“ Word on the Way ”included traveling essays and essays published in different years in periodicals in periodicals publications, as well as fragments from interviews devoted to the topic of travel. This book can be read in the same way: both as a guide and as a collection of art and literary essays, and as an autobiographical prose. It also includes three chapters from the unfinished book “Pictures of Italy”, the heroes of which were the artists of Giotto, Simone Martini, Pietro and Ambrojo Lorenzetti
