What is the meaning of monasticism? What role do monasteries play in the life of modern society? What benefits do the monks bring? What is seniority? Such questions are now concerned about many just as they have worried at the beginning of the 20th century, when this brochure was written. Its special value lies in the fact that, when compiling it, the famous spiritual writer Father Sergius Patvurikov (1867-1947) relied on letters of the Optina elders.
