“They crawl, to be born in Bethlehem” - this is a collection of essays written by Joan Didion throughout the 1960s for various periodicals and played a crucial role in the formation of “new journalism”. In them, Joan Didion, a laureate of the National Book Prize, captured a tectonic shift that occurred in all areas of the life of the USA in the 1960s. The name of the collection and one of the essays in it was given by a line from the poem by W. B. Yates "The Second Coming" (1919), fulfilled by the foreboding of the catastrophe - the birth of not the Savior, but the monster caused by the discord and chaos of the rapidly changing world. “They crawl in order to be born in Bethlehem " - this is permeated with horror before the collapse of the old world and at the same time an inquisitive and sensitive report on the world is new, evidence of the observer involved in the unique decade in American history, whose contradictory echo continues to sound.
