“They crawl, to be born in Bethlehem” - this is a collection of essays written by Joan Didion throughout the 1960s for various periodicals and played a crucial role in the formation of “new journalism”. In them, Joan Didion, a laureate of the National Book Prize, captured a tectonic shift that occurred in all areas of the life of the USA in the 1960s. The name of the collection and one of the essays in it was given by a line from the poem by W. B. Yates "The Second Coming" (1919), fulfilled by the foreboding of the catastrophe - the birth of not the Savior, but the monster caused by the discord and chaos of the rapidly changing world. “They crawl in order to be born in Bethlehem " - this is permeated with horror before the collapse of the old world and at the same time an inquisitive and sensitive report on the world is new, evidence of the observer involved in the unique decade in American history, whose contradictory echo continues to sound.
Didion invites readers to look into a dizzying abyss that separates the generation of hippies, swallowing acid in the Hay-Eshbury area in San Francisco on the eve of the Summer of Love, and the generation of John Wayne, the star of Hollywood westerns, whose age has irrevocably leaves. Balanting between irony and sympathy, Didion with harsh and accurate strokes writes bright portraits of not only individuals: a billionaire-producer Howard Hughes, Folk-singer and activist Joan Baes-but also places on the map (Las Vegas, New York, South South California and others), representing the complex image of America, at the same time frightening and delicate, sinister, recognizably author, inhabited and very personal.
Joan Didion (born 1934) - American writer, journalist, essay, scriptwriter. Born and grew up in Sacramento, California. I wrote essays for Vogue, Life, Esquire, The Saturday Evening Post, The New York Times and other periodicals, having developed a bright individual style in essays. For the autobiographical book "The Year of Magical Thinking", dedicated to the experience of the loss of a loved one, the writer was awarded the National Book Prize and the Medici Prize.
