Chinese hieroglyph "Chan" (or "Zen" in Japanese) is the equivalent of the Sanskrit word "Dhyan", which means meditation, one of the six methods of self -improvement. The difference between Chan"s school and other schools is that the goal of the first is instant enlightenment, while the task of the latter is the gradual achievement of the sequential steps of holiness before complete enlightenment. The task of Chan"s school is to get rid of consciousness from any feelings and passions in order to free it from all phenomenal, so that the essential nature can return to its original state and unhindered to function naturally
