Saint Theophanes (Govorov Georgy Vasilievich) was born on January 10, 1815 in the Oryol region in the village. Chernavskoye. Father was a priest of the local church.

Since August 1847, he has been determined on obedience to Jerusalem in a spiritual mission. Upon returning to his homeland, Hieromonk Theophanes was appointed as a teacher at the Spiritual Academy of St. Petersburg.
And on April 1855, he received a rank of archimandrite, and six months later he was appointed rector of the theological seminary of Olonetsk.
In 1857, he became the rector of the Special Academy of St. Petersburg.
In June 1859, Metropolitan Grigory (Postnikov) in the Alexander Nevsky monastery of Archimandrite Feofan was erected to the bishop of Tambov.
Since July 1863 he headed the Vladimir department. And three years later, he unexpectedly filed an application with the Synod with a request to dismiss him to rest in the Tambov diocese in the Vyshensky monastery. The request was satisfied. In the Vyshensky monastery, St. Theophanes accepted the feat of the shutter. However, he led a very active lifestyle. He conducted a big correspondence, wrote spiritual books.
The death of St. Theophanes occurred on the Epiphany holiday in 1894 on January 6.
