In the 15th century, the famous chronicler Leonty Maheras in his "Cypriot chronicles" called the island of Cyprus "island of saints" - so great here the number of saints and martyrs revered by the Church. The island is consecrated by the exploits of many saints of God. The native of the island of St. Barnabas, the founder and patron of the Cyprus Church, the holy apostles Mark and the First -Called, the great martyr George the Victorious, St. Spiridon of the Trimyphont and many other saints and ascetics of piety, became famous for their labors and in other countries. According to legend, the Mother of God, following the Holy Mount Athos, stayed in Cyprus with St. Lazar, who was then the first bishop of Kition, modern Larnaki.
